Founded in 1987 as the IFLA Eastern Region, IFLA Asia Pacific Region (APR) has evolved from a regional extension of the global federation into a prominent organization in its own right. Renamed in 2006 to reflect its growing presence across Asia and the Pacific, IFLA APR has since become one of the largest non-profit bodies in landscape architecture, with 14 country members and over 150 corporate members. With more than 700 active community members and outreach to over 15,000 contacts, the federation continues to grow steadily, marked by a 167.5% membership increase over five years. IFLA APR remains dedicated to advancing the profession—hosting awards programs, knowledge-sharing sessions, and networking events that celebrate excellence, foster collaboration, and elevate landscape architecture throughout the region.
Leadership has been a cornerstone of IFLA APR’s continued success and influence across the region. From its early years as IFLA Eastern Region to its evolution into IFLA Asia Pacific Region in 2006, IFLA APR has been shaped by visionary leaders committed to strengthening the voice of landscape architecture. Throughout its 46-year journey, IFLA APR Presidents and Executive Committees have provided strong, forward-thinking guidance—navigating complex challenges like climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and regional disparities—while uniting member associations through shared goals and strategic collaboration.
Leadership within IFLA APR is not just about governance; it is about fostering future generations. Initiatives such as the Tomodachi Project, the Young Landscape Architects Alliance (YLAA), and the Talk & Share series underscore IFLA APR’s commitment to nurturing emerging professionals and promoting inclusive dialogue. Furthermore, with dedicated working groups and standing committees on education, finance, policy, and communications, IFLA APR's leadership ecosystem is designed to empower regional voices while maintaining global alignment.
This commitment to leadership is reflected in the region’s growing influence and participation. From virtual councils with near-universal member attendance to congresses that spotlight the urgent role of landscape architects in shaping resilient communities, IFLA APR continues to lead with purpose—driving progress, advocating for sustainability, and championing professional excellence across Asia and the Pacific.
