Peter Whiting
Peter Whiting is a registered landscape architect with over 25 years of experience in master planning, urban design, and the delivery of large-scale landscape projects across New Zealand and internationally. Currently an Associate Partner at Boffa Miskell, he has led and contributed to a wide range of projects that span infrastructure, urban development, senior living villages, golf courses, and ecological restoration.
Peter’s career began with a foundation in architectural draughting and construction in Christchurch, which gave him a strong grounding in construction methods and design detailing. He went on to graduate with First Class Honours in Landscape Architecture from Lincoln University (1997) and also holds an NZCAD (Architecture) from Christchurch Polytechnic (1988).
Over the years, Peter has played leadership roles on several nationally significant infrastructure and urban development projects. Notable examples include:
- NCTIR Kaikoura Transport Recovery ($2Bn, 2020) – Design Manager (Landscape)
- Waterview Tunnel ($1.4Bn, 2017) – Landscape and Urban Design Manager
- Newmarket Viaduct Replacement ($150M, 2016) – Senior Landscape Role

- Wawata Estate ($88M, 2023) – Landscape Design Manager

His work integrates technical excellence in master planning, design management, landscape ecology, and rehabilitation, underpinned by strong skills in project delivery, stakeholder engagement, and peer review.
Peter particularly enjoys working in multi-disciplinary teams, facilitating collaboration between diverse specialists to achieve innovative and high-quality outcomes. He is highly experienced in engaging with clients, contractors, and public stakeholders, often presenting to large audiences and navigating projects under significant political and public scrutiny.
Professionally, Peter’s career spans senior roles in both New Zealand and the UK, including positions at Broadway Malyan Landscape and Derek Lovejoy Partnership in London, before returning to Boffa Miskell where he has held leadership roles since 2003. He also worked as Design Manager with Darby Partners from 2014 to 2017, managing high-profile development projects.
Peter is a Registered Landscape Architect with the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) and remains actively involved in advancing the profession through project leadership and mentoring younger colleagues.
With a proven track record in delivering complex, high-value projects and a passion for sustainable, people-focused design, Peter brings deep expertise in creating landscapes that balance functionality, ecology, and community engagement.
