Zhongjie Wang
Professor Zhongjie Wang is a leading figure in landscape architecture in China, combining roles as a technical expert, academic leader, and senior manager. He currently serves as Deputy Chief Engineer at CAUPD and Dean of its Institute of Landscape Architecture, holding the title of Professor-Level Senior Engineer. He also plays an influential role in national committees, including the Expert Committee for National Cultural Parks, the Protected Areas Expert Committee of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the Landscape Architecture Expert Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, where he is Secretary-General. In addition, he is President of the Planning and Design Branch of the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture (CHSLA) and Vice President of the Landscape Architecture Branch of the China Exploration and Design Association.
Academically, Professor Wang is on the editorial boards of Chinese Landscape Architecture and Landscape Architecture journals, and serves as a Special External Doctoral Supervisor at Beijing Forestry University. Internationally, he has contributed as a jury member for the UK Landscape Institute (LI) Awards in 2021 and 2022.
His research is aligned with national priorities, focusing on:
- Synergies between national parks and urban ecological conservation
- Protection and utilization of coastal resources
- Green space planning and park landscape design in urban renewal contexts
He has published over 20 academic papers and authored or translated several books on urban ecology and landscape planning. His policy impact is significant, having helped draft over 20 national-level plans, policies, and technical standards, including the National Urban Ecological Protection and Construction Plan, the National Greenway Network Plan, the 14th Five-Year Development Plan for the Landscape Architecture Industry, and standards for urban green space planning and road green space design.
Professor Wang has directed or participated in more than 50 major projects of national importance. These span cultural heritage (e.g., Master Plans for the National Cultural Park of the Mausoleum of Emperor Huangdi and the Terracotta Army Scenic Area), ecological restoration (e.g., Xixi National Wetland Park, Hangzhou, Yunlong Lake Scenic Area, Xuzhou), new urban development (e.g., Zhongyuan District, Xiong’an New Area), cultural landscapes (e.g., Grand Canal Cultural Belt, Xishan Mountain and Yongding River Cultural Belts), and urban ecological planning (e.g., Green Space System Plan, Haidian District, Beijing).
His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including First and Second Prizes of the Huaxia Construction Science and Technology Progress Award, multiple Outstanding Urban-Rural Planning and Design Awards, and repeated CHSLA Outstanding Planning and Design Awards.
Through his leadership in policy, academic research, technical standards, and landmark projects, Professor Wang has made profound contributions to the advancement of landscape architecture and urban ecological planning in China.
